Rembrandt: Unum Necessarium

UNUM NECESSARIUM

You young aspiring painters of the soul
I who lie here am Rembrandt of the Rhine
Arrogant when young, then successful
I had a big house and everything was fine.
But then being an artist and not a business man
I went smash over Java and over tulip futures
My wealth went through my hands like sand
And in my face I painted suffering’s sutures.
Muttering to myself like one mad at the end
I didn’t go around the bend, for what I said
Was a bit of a prayer for the dead:
Unum necessarium was my vade mecum.
You see my testament, my self-portrait
What I want to know, whaddya goin’ to do about it?
